A new article about Omega-3 landed on my desk last week. Well, it was one of a dozen articles that landed on my desk but this one had more of an impact on me then the others.
Having studied the benefits of seal oil I’ve known about the unique benefits of DPA for some time now. However, most people only know about the benefits of EPA and DHA because that’s what we see on TV, radio and in the print. This is primarily because EPA and DHA are found in fish and fish oils and, to a lesser extent, flax and flax oils as well.
DPA is often overlooked because seal oil Omega-3 has taken a back seat to fish oil for so long. But mounting evidence in the UK, Australia, Japan and other countries are proving that DPA is not only essential but extremely beneficial to our health.
The article I read is from Nutrition & Dietetics and is titled “Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in red meat” by Peter Howe, Jon Buckley and Barbara Meyer (Click here to read the article).
This article is from Australia and addresses the Omega-3 levels in different red meats. One thing it examines in close detail is DPA—the third major component of Omega-3 that is often overlooked. EPA is traditionally known as heart / cardiovascular Omega-3. It helps elasticize vessel walls, reduced CV risk factors and helps repair damaged blood vessels. Through human intervention trails conducted with DPA enriched supplements the group discovered that “DPA is equally if not more beneficial than either EPA or DHA for improving CV risk factors.” The article also noted that “seal oil is more efficacious then fish oil in reducing plasma triglycerides.”
Why is this significant? Well, seal oil is starting to get more international and scientific reorganization. The proof of DPA-rich seal oil has been around for centuries when we look to the Inuit’s of Canada and Denmark. This was proved in the famous 1970s by Bang and Dyberg. This article is further proof that seal oil works and it is more effective then fish oil.
